Reduce File Size

If you’re ever working on a PowerPoint presentation and notice that the file seems to get bigger for no reason (click File, Properties, General tab to see how large your file is), you can reduce the file size by up to 50 percent by resaving it under a different name.

If it doesn't work the first time you do it, try it again.

Compress Pictures to Make File Smaller

If you’ve embedded a lot of pictures, you can compress one picture or all of them. If you choose to compress all pictures, wait until you have inserted all of them so PowerPoint won’t attempt to re‑compress them.

  1. Click on the picture you want to compress, click to Show Picture Toolbar, and click the Compress Pictures button . Make desired selections.

If your file size doesn’t seem to be shrinking when you do the compress, turn off Fast Saves.

  1. Click Tools, Options, Save tab, untick Allow fast saves, resave the file under a different name.

WORD CHOICE-Tip Barbara McNichol www.barbaramcnichol.com

Among, amongst – “Among” means surrounded by others (e.g., among friends) or in a group (e.g., among many things to do). Some dictionaries show “amongst” as an alternative to “among”; others don’t even include it. “Among” is recommended because it’s simpler and more up to date than “amongst.”

TECH-Tip

Call me. It's free.

If you haven't tried calling and talking with someone using your computer and the Internet, it's easy, so try it now.

Some time ago, I downloaded some free software called Skype. It works. Then I asked people I usually call long distance to download the software too.

Once my friends downloaded the software, their computer started ringing. When they clicked the Answer button, I was on the other end, clear as a bell.

I have unlimited long distance on my land line, and don't use Skype that much except to "play" with being able to talk to someone from my computer. But I plan to seriously use it as I start to travel more abroad. It works the same way.

Here is what you'll need:

  • PC running Windows 2000 and up.
  • Internet connection (ideally broadband).
  • Speakers and microphone (built-in or separate, headset is best).
  • A processor of at least 400 MHz.
  • 128 MB RAM.
  • 15 MB free disk space on your hard drive.

I didn't believe it until I tried it. Calls are free and crystal clear. And there is an add-in product called Pamela you can use to record phone conversations (as in interviews). Click the bubble to download

One more thing, if you're still on dial-up, it's possible to surf the Web while you're talking with Skype. To download Skype (rhymes with type), visit www.skype.com.

[Peggy] You, as usual, were wonderful, entertaining and informative. I make it a point to attend any of your seminars if I'm available. They are always helpful in this hectic world.

Did you know that hospitals allow dogs to prance around to visit patients! I could not believe my eyes. In the last issue I wrote about hotel chains allowing them, and now hospitals! No wonder people are getting sicker! So a nurse pats a dog then comes to see you. You're allergic. They say they have a strong hand-washing policy, but how many times have you known people not to do what they're supposed to do?

Don't just think things up think them through
by Peggy Duncan

In a movie with Jennifer Lopez, Enough, the best part for me was watching how she had planned her escape from her too crazy husband. After the last time he'd nutted up, she'd decided she wouldn't take it anymore, so she made her move.

I watched as I understood a contraption she'd built that would lock him in the house. She'd stored a set of keys to her unlocked car in the car's ashtray; she had an extra set of comfortable clothes and cash money stashed in another car at a deserted house (she had the keys), and she got away. It was something to watch!

Jennifer hadn't just thought up the idea of leaving that fool; she'd thought through the whole scenario. She had a plan for everything.

And that's what you'll have to do with every project you're working on.

That's what local government, state government, and the federal government should have done before the tragedy in New Orleans. That whole incident boiled down to a huge, disorganized mess.

But I won't get started on that because that would take a lot more pages than I have in COPE.

The point is, in all of your dealings, think people! Write everything down, play it out in your head, walk through it, just like Jennifer did. It was a masterful thing to watch.
